Take That, Rewind it Back…
This weekend wasn’t exactly what I had hoped it would be. Which isn’t a bad thing, I mean it’s not like I was planning to have a absolutely wonderful weekend or anything.
In Saturday night we watched The Bank Job instead of Shutter, because John is a pussy. But whatever, John got Reese’s Pieces. I was instantly filled with the uncontrollable need to watch E.T.
I hadn’t seen the 2002 re-release of E.T., I was completely against the re-release. I absolutely hated the notion of a CGI E.T.
I don’t know if you know this about me, but I’ve just about completely blocked out my childhood. There are certain things that people my age remember about pop culture that I don’t. The reason for this block is not something I will likely ever discuss here, so don’t ask.
But E.T., I remember E.T. I remember being a kid obsessed with it, I remember watching the VHS until it wouldn’t play anymore. It’s the first movie that I ever felt belonged to me. And when I first heard it was being re-released I got really excited. I hadn’t ever seen it in theaters, or if I did I was just way too young to remember it. Then I heard about CGI and radio’s in place of guns. And I refused.
Unfortunately one of the things that I respect the most about Steven Spielberg is ultimately the thing I hate about Steven Spielberg. He releases a DVD, for the most part, once. The is no Ultimate Super Collector’s Special Edition of Schindler’s List. Unfortunately I never bought E.T. on DVD because I was never able to find the Gift Set, a DVD that is not longer made, and the only place you can find the original un-fucked with 1982 edition of E.T.
So I was forced to go to Blockbuster to rent it. And the only version they rent is the 2002 version. I decided that it was time to see this version and that it would just have to do.
Boy, was I wrong. I hate you Steven Spielberg. You took my movie away from me and gave me a a film with all the wonder taken out in it’s place. You ruined E.T. and won’t even give me the option of buying the original on DVD so that I can pretend 2002 never happened.
